Stop guessing, start esti­mating!

Esti­mating sup­ports good project management and business decision making. So how can we produce more accurate esti­mates of a project’s cost, schedule, resource and benefits? This short, inter­active tutorial will introduce the proven con­cepts of robust estimating.

But esti­mating is both a science and an art. By art, we mean a skill, a skill that needs to be prac­ticed and learned. For example, which methods are available, and is one better than the other? When is top-down the right approach, and when is bottom-up to be pre­ferred? How do you con­vince others to trust in your estimate? We will cover these and more in this tutorial.

Andy Nolan BSc Hons, CEng, FBCS, CITP

Andy Nolan joined Rolls-Royce in 1989 and spent 23 years in software deve­lo­pment and project management. In this role, he deve­loped some of the initial esti­mating tools, tech­niques and training now used across Rolls-Royce. Andy became a Six-Sigma Black Belt in 2007.

Since 2012, Andy has been the Chief of Project Esti­mating, spe­cia­lising in project deve­lo­pment costs, resources, sche­dules and benefits. His role is to eva­luate, develop and deploy capa­bi­lities for esti­mating across the business. Some of this work is now available in the public domain for which Andy has received recognition.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender, Dipl.-Kauffrau (FH), M.A.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender joined Rolls-Royce in 2011 and spent 8 years as project manager, pro­gramme con­troller and pro­gramme manager across various pro­jects and pro­grammes. She is a Six-Sigma Green Belt, Risk Faci­li­tator and IPMA cer­tified. In 2017, she became co-pre­senter of Rolls-Royce esti­mation training.

Since 2019, Anne-Kathrin is with Kalaidos Uni­versity of Applied Sci­ences and works as leader of degree pro­grammes and con­sultant for further edu­cation. Her focus is on project management, lean management and other degree pro­grammes with indus­trial background.
