Stop gues­sing, start esti­ma­ting!

Esti­ma­ting sup­ports good pro­ject manage­ment and busi­ness decision making. So how can we pro­duce more accu­rate esti­mates of a project’s cost, sche­dule, resource and bene­fits? This short, inter­ac­tive tuto­rial will intro­duce the proven con­cepts of robust estimating.

But esti­ma­ting is both a sci­ence and an art. By art, we mean a skill, a skill that needs to be prac­ticed and learned. For example, which methods are avail­able, and is one better than the other? When is top-down the right approach, and when is bottom-up to be pre­ferred? How do you con­vince others to trust in your esti­mate? We will cover these and more in this tutorial.

Andy Nolan BSc Hons, CEng, FBCS, CITP

Andy Nolan joined Rolls-Royce in 1989 and spent 23 years in soft­ware deve­lo­p­ment and pro­ject manage­ment. In this role, he deve­loped some of the initial esti­ma­ting tools, tech­ni­ques and trai­ning now used across Rolls-Royce. Andy became a Six-Sigma Black Belt in 2007.

Since 2012, Andy has been the Chief of Pro­ject Esti­ma­ting, spe­cia­li­sing in pro­ject deve­lo­p­ment costs, resources, sche­dules and bene­fits. His role is to eva­luate, develop and deploy capa­bi­li­ties for esti­ma­ting across the busi­ness. Some of this work is now avail­able in the public domain for which Andy has received recognition.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender, Dipl.-Kauffrau (FH), M.A.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender joined Rolls-Royce in 2011 and spent 8 years as pro­ject manager, pro­gramme con­troller and pro­gramme manager across various pro­jects and pro­grammes. She is a Six-Sigma Green Belt, Risk Faci­li­tator and IPMA cer­ti­fied. In 2017, she became co-pre­senter of Rolls-Royce esti­ma­tion training.

Since 2019, Anne-Kathrin is with Kalaidos Uni­ver­sity of App­lied Sci­ences and works as leader of degree pro­grammes and con­sul­tant for fur­ther edu­ca­tion. Her focus is on pro­ject manage­ment, lean manage­ment and other degree pro­grammes with indus­trial background.
