Art of Estimation

Stop gues­sing, start esti­ma­ting!

Estimating sup­ports good pro­ject manage­ment and busi­ness decisi­on making. So how can we pro­du­ce more accu­ra­te esti­ma­tes of a project’s cost, sche­du­le, resour­ce and bene­fits? This short, inter­ac­ti­ve tuto­ri­al will intro­du­ce the pro­ven con­cepts of robust estimating.

But esti­ma­ting is both a sci­ence and an art. By art, we mean a skill, a skill that needs to be prac­ti­ced and lear­ned. For examp­le, which methods are avail­ab­le, and is one bet­ter than the other? When is top-down the right approach, and when is bot­tom-up to be pre­fer­red? How do you con­vin­ce others to trust in your esti­ma­te? We will cover the­se and more in this tutorial.

Andy Nolan BSc Hons, CEng, FBCS, CITP

Andy Nolan joi­ned Rolls-Royce in 1989 and spent 23 years in soft­ware deve­lo­p­ment and pro­ject manage­ment. In this role, he deve­lo­ped some of the initi­al esti­ma­ting tools, tech­ni­ques and trai­ning now used across Rolls-Royce. Andy beca­me a Six-Sigma Black Belt in 2007.

Since 2012, Andy has been the Chief of Project Estimating, spe­cia­li­sing in pro­ject deve­lo­p­ment cos­ts, resour­ces, sche­du­les and bene­fits. His role is to eva­lua­te, deve­lop and deploy capa­bi­li­ties for esti­ma­ting across the busi­ness. Some of this work is now avail­ab­le in the public domain for which Andy has recei­ved recognition.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender, Dipl.-Kauffrau (FH), M.A.

Anne-Kathrin Bolender joi­ned Rolls-Royce in 2011 and spent 8 years as pro­ject mana­ger, pro­gram­me con­trol­ler and pro­gram­me mana­ger across various pro­jects and pro­gram­mes. She is a Six-Sigma Green Belt, Risk Facilitator and IPMA cer­ti­fied. In 2017, she beca­me co-pre­sen­ter of Rolls-Royce esti­ma­ti­on training.

Since 2019, Anne-Kathrin is with Kalaidos University of Applied Sciences and works as lea­der of degree pro­gram­mes and con­sul­tant for fur­ther edu­ca­ti­on. Her focus is on pro­ject manage­ment, lean manage­ment and other degree pro­gram­mes with indus­tri­al background.
